Choose 20W40 if your motorcycle runs hot or you live in a region where temperatures regularly exceed 35°C — such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, or the southern states in summer. The higher cold-start viscosity (20W vs 10W) means slightly slower oil flow at first start in cold mornings, but the 40-grade operating thickness provides better film strength at high engine temperatures. Ideal for bikes running long distances in peak Indian summer.

20W40 is the OEM-recommended grade for older Hero Honda bikes (Splendor, Passion, CD Dawn), classic Bajaj Boxer/CT100 models, and TVS Victor/Max4R. Many of these older engines have wider manufacturing tolerances that benefit from the slightly thicker 40-grade oil. If your bike manufacturer specifies 20W40 in the owner's manual, this is the correct Carbo Oil product for you.

Yes, 20W40 is a perfectly acceptable alternative to 20W50 for most older motorcycles. The difference is only at high operating temperature — 50-grade is marginally thicker. Unless your manufacturer specifically requires 20W50 (uncommon in bikes), 20W40 provides adequate protection with slightly better fuel efficiency in hot conditions.

Carbo Oil FS 20W40 carries API SL certification, which was the standard before API SN and SP. While it works well in older BS4 and pre-BS4 engines, we recommend the SUPER-FS SN or 01 GT SP grades for BS6 motorcycles manufactured after April 2020. BS6 engines have tighter tolerances and catalytic converters that benefit from the improved detergent and anti-wear chemistry in newer API certifications.
